Inline Skating Summer Programs

Northern Roller Sports SKATING CLUB
MEETING MINUTES
SATURDAY MARCH 22, 2008

Rollersports Canada Present: Wayne Burnett, Alex Perrie, AJ Perrie, Brad Scott, Allison Nolan, Jeanette Aasman, Sondra Scott

1. Alex welcomed everyone, and introduced our guest Wayne Burnett.
2. Starting date is Wednesday May 7, 2008. The first night all skaters must go to the Harriston arena for a skills assessment. Beginner skaters will be spending the first few weeks at the Harriston arena. After the skills assessment some skaters may be directed to go to the track after the first night. Saturday skates will always be at the track for all.
3. It was suggested for any skaters interested in participating in provincials, maybe should start earlier. As Provincials is the weekend of May 30th. Some suggestions were to maybe have a full-day clinic in Neustadt (rent it), and/or weather depending AJ could hold some Saturday morning practices in April.
4. If people want extra time to practice Neustadt usually offers public skate on Friday and Saturday nights 7-9pm if they don't have anything else booked.
5. Harriston arena is charging the club $50.00 a night to use 6:30-8pm for our practices at the start if the season. Skaters should meet at the arena before 6.00pm on the 7th. Please bring all skating equipment as well as comfortable cloths and running shoes.
6. Discussion on having a Board of Directors:
- Would like to apply for a Trillium Grant, for a cement pad 180"X80". This would be very beneficial for training.
- Should start to form as a group with a Board of Directors, to apply for this application.
- Need to use appropriate language for this proposal, they look for this when reviewing the application
- As a group we need to have an idea and priorities of what we are asking for.
- Once we know then we meet with them, and then we do the application.

Alex handed out forms asking the group to sign up for different executive positions. As a group, members agreed to stand for the positions as followed. Any other member (parents) are welcome to stand for any of these positions.

President: Brad Scott
Vice President: Allison Nolan
Treasurer: Shane Wanlass
Secretary: Sondra Scott
Directors: Jeanette Aasman
Kristine Wanlass

7. It was discussed that we should apply to become incorporated. It is a matter of filling out the paperwork, submitting it and paying a fee. Once incorporated then those papers would need to be included with the Trillium proposal. As a group we felt we should do this and that this should be our first step.
-
8. Club Fees
The club fees are again $85 this year. There is also a family rate of $200 for families of 3 or more. The money will be put towards the building of a smaller training pad which will be put next to the main track. It is felt this pad is essential for training the younger and beginner skaters.

Insurance costs
Each skater has to be covered by an insurance plan. Currently there are 2 plans available from Rollersports Canada. The basic insurance covers skaters at all practices as well as Ontario and Quebec cups throughout the season The cost for the basic is $50. Competative insurance covers all of the above and coverage at the Provincial and National Championships. This plan is $90 for the first family member and decreases by $10 for each additional member.

Fundraising.
To help offset the insurance costs we have several ideas to raise money including a team garage sale during the May 24 weekend. It was proposed we ask to use the Harriston arena pavilion. We are also looking for more ideas.
We would like to order new skinsuits for skaters. It was proposed that the track be available for a 12 hour skatathon. Each skater would get pledges. We are hoping that our track being the site of Nationals will attract other clubs to participate. Another idea to assist with the cost for the skinsuits, skaters interested could get corporate sponsors, and then the sponsors name would go on the skinsuits.

Meeting adjourned at 5:00pm

Your Coach
Again this year Alex Perrie will be our head coach. Alex has been involved in rollersports since the early 70's when he was a member of Canada's first World Team. He is currently a certified coach in Canada and an Advance Speed Coach in the United States. In 2006 Alex was the head coach for our World team in Anyang Korea at the World Championships and had the most successful performance in history from a Canadian squad. While most clubs focus on older skaters it is his belief the future of this sport relies on the youngsters. Our programs have produced stronger faster more powerful skaters in the speed, hockey, figure disciplines

2008 Spinning Classes

Classes for advanced and beginer groups

What is Spinning

Spinning is an aerobic exercise that you do on a specially designed stationary bicycle called a spinning bike. This bike is unique because the wheel is very heavy. The mass of this balanced wheel simulates actual riding much better than a conventional lightweight exercise bike wheel. As with most exercise bikes the resistance on the front wheel can be adjusted to simulate varying terrain. At the Canadian Inline Training Centre the instructor talks you through a visualisation of an outdoor cycling workout while motivational music plays in the background. You might hear, 'You're going up a steep hill now, so don’t give up’ during a tough part of the workout, and then, ‘You made it. Enjoy the downhill ride’ during the less strenuous part of the class. The pace varies throughout the workout — sometimes you’re pedalling as fast as you can (low resistance, high crank speed simulates a downhill run) other times you increase the resistance and pedal slowly from a standing position (simulating a hill climb). This helps you to focus inwardly and work on your mind as well as your body

Why we love it: Spinning burns serious calories (about 450 in 45 minutes) and offers an excellent aerobic workout that makes your heart pump fast. It also tones your quadriceps (the ones on the front of your thighs) and outer thigh muscles. Because you stay in one place with the same basic movement throughout, spinning doesn't involve a lot of co-ordination. You are in complete control of your pace. You can adjust the intensity of your spinning session simply by adjusting your pace or the tension knob on the bike.

Advanced Classes run onTue-Thur from 7.00 till 8.00

Beginer Classes run on Mon-Wed from 7.00 till 8.00

Each coarse runs for 6 weeks (12 sessions)

Cost is $85 + GST
